Leonard Shurin has been teaching English literacy to grades PreK-12 and adults for over 30 years. With a B.A. in English/British Literature, and minors in foreign languages and math, Bethlehem Steel Corporation (BSC) hired him as a remedial Math and English Instructor in their Mechanical Department to correct employee deficiencies. Later, he acquired a B.A. in Education with PA certification in English. Subsequently, the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center hired him to teach and write grants.
Grants included Workforce Literacy, GED, Pre-GED, ESL, Adult Remedial Reading and Math, Family Literacy, and a Barbara Bush Literacy Grant. Eventually the grants included Altoona CTC, Admiral Peary CTC, and Somerset CTC.
At that time, the National Association of Bilingual Educators (NABE) invited Leonard to present at their annual conference held in Pittsburgh, PA, on the use of portfolios in ESL. The grants offered the opportunity to teach ESL to adults and children after school at GJCTC, and train Literacy teachers/tutors with the University of Pittsburgh. Concurrently, he helped establish the Cambria County Literacy Council.
Many years spent testing and teaching ELs permitted him to acquire PA ESL Program Specialist certification. Soon Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 offered a position as the Curriculum and Staff Developer/ESL. With a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Pennsylvania State University, he became published in “Curriculum and the Cultural Body”, a book envisioning distance/remote learning.
More recently, he co-presented with Ms. Cheri Peterman-Grimaldi statewide for the Pennsylvania Department of Education at the 2021 PDE English Language Development Virtual Professional Learning Summit on the topic, “Access to Equitable, Affirming, and Socially Just Education”.
